In a sector which features mainly brand new vans, the Ford Fiesta Van is the granddaddy. Power is provided by either a 1.3-litre petrol or 1.4-litre diesel engine offering 70bhp and 68bhp respectively and load volume is a tad over one cubic metre. Duel stage driver and passenger airbags come as standard, along with ABS brakes and side airbags are available as a paid for option. Its ride and handling characteristics are faultless, while there is plenty of legroom
A 1.4-litre, 68 bhp, common rail turbo diesel. Peak torque of 118 Ib/ft occurs at a lowly 1,750rpm. This is an excellent small capacity engine and endows Fiesta Van with lively performance while remaining refined. The manual five-speed gearbox has a slick and precise action and is positioned quite high off the floor which makes gear changes effortless.
Ride and handling are well up to par and the brakes (ventilated discs at the front and drums at the rear) provide secure stopping power. Anti-lock is a standard fitment, we are glad to report.
The 1.0m³ load area has a 647mm loading height, a maximum length of 1,320mm and 980mm between the wheel boxes. Gross payload is 494kg.
The sides of the load area, including the wheel boxes, are well protected by plastic mouldings and carpets.
The cab is pretty spacious considering the van's external dimensions and features remote double central locking - including deadlocking- height-adjustable driver's seat and dual-stage airbags for both occupants; they go off partially in a relatively minor impact, but fully if there's a major collision. The half-height solid bulkhead can be topped off with a mesh grille for £100.
Front side airbags can be specified as optional extras, as can a CD/radio, air conditioning, metallic paint and an alarm.
As far as in-cab storage space is concerned there's a pocket in each door, a lidded glove box with pen and cup holders, a big tray at the bottom of the stylish facia and a moulding to hold a cup of coffee or a can.
A four-speed fan pumps air to a quartet of smart-looking moveable round vents - two in the middle of the dashboard and one at each extremity - and the ventilation system includes air recirculation. Air conditioning is up for grabs for an additional £400.
Fuel consumption is excellent for the 1.4TDCi at 60mpg and this gives it a range in excess of 400 miles.
Service intervals are set at 12,500 miles and Fiesta Van comes with a three year/60,000 mile warranty.
