Based on the latest version of Fiat's Punto car introduced at the end of 2003, the front wheel drive Punto Van is available with a 1.3-litre common rail turbo diesel, 70 bhp and peak torque of 133 Ib/ft (1,750rpm).
Front suspension includes independent MacPherson struts and an anti-roll bar while the rear relies on a torque axle. Telescopic dampers are fitted all round. Dual drive electro-hydraulic power steering comes as standard. Prod the 'City' button on the dash and you'll be given extra assistance.
With a gross weight of 1,570kg the JTD Punto Van offers a maximum payload of 510kg. Access to the 1 m³ cargo bay is by means of a hatch-type door, complete with a wash/wipe system. A half-height steel bulkhead topped off by a full height plastic grille is fitted
Punto Van boasts an attractive looking dashboard and lots of oddment storage space.
This 1.3JTD engine is a revelation. It provides plenty of punch and there's ample low-down grunt. The ride and handling are good.
Fuel consumption is excellent at 64mpg, especially considering the performance potential.
The service interval is 12,000 miles, which seems a little too frequent for a common rail TD. An immobiliser is fitted as standard.
